Cloves are small, reddish-brown, nail-shaped unopened flower buds harvested from the clove tree, which grows 8-12 meters tall. The buds are harvested before blooming, sun-dried, and then used whole or ground as a highly fragrant spice. Clove trees are native to the Maluku Islands (Indonesia) but cultivated in many tropical regions including India, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar.
